Beneath the White Coat by Professor Dame Clare Gerada
Professor Dame Clare Gerada’s book, Beneath the White Coat, explores the mental health of doctors and the risks of burnout, depression and suicide associated with the profession.
Our campaign revealed how doctors’ well-being is consistently overlooked by both themselves and the system at large, while also exposing the increasing number of doctors seeking mental health support in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.
We secured a wealth of interviews, comment pieces, news articles, book reviews and extracts, opening up this vital conversation at a crucial time. This included interviews and hard-hitting op-eds in the Guardian, Daily Telegraph, Metro, Sky News and BBC Breakfast, among other outlets. The issue was also widely reported by the healthcare sector with interviews appearing in BMJ podcast, Hospital Times, GP Online and Healthcare Leader News, book reviews in The Lancet, BJGP and Nursing Times, and a five-part book serialisation in Independent Practitioner Today.
The book left a lasting legacy, picking up first prize at the prestigious BMA Book Awards 2021 in the “Good Medical Practice” category.
