Promoting diversity in children's entertainment

High Rise Mystery by Sharna Jackson

Britain’s first black British children’s detective book by debut author Sharna Jackson was released by inclusive publisher Knights Of.

Our PR and outreach campaign put children’s diversity in entertainment to the top of the news agenda, while raising the profile and importance of BAME authors. For us, focusing on the story behind why Sharna wrote the book was just as interesting as the book itself.

The result was national exposure with a major interview on BBC News Online on bringing diversity to children’s books, book of the week in The Sunday Times, rave reviews in The Guardian, Irish Times, and The Week Junior, and a feature on stereotype smashing books in The Big Issue, among others.

Our author tour saw Sharna pack out schools, bookshops and festivals including Cheltenham, Edinburgh and Greenwich, with her hugely popular events. The publicity and exposure generated discussions online with Sharna trending on Twitter, and the book reaching #1 on several Amazon categories on publication day.

Our campaign sparked healthy debate among the public, readers, authors and the publishing industry, helping to bring an important issue to life.
