Exploring My Limits, a new W.F. Howes Audio Original written and narrated by Dwayne Fields, releases today and offers a gripping first-person account of a life lived against the odds, and against expectation.

From growing up amid violence in inner-city London to becoming the first Black Briton to walk to the Magnetic North Pole and now the UK’s Chief Scout, Dwayne’s story is one of resilience and transformation.

As a child in Jamaica, he loved nature, but moving to London at six forced him to bury that part of himself - until, 12 years later, an attempt on his life forced him to change his path for good.

Dwayne said: “Voicing my own story was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done - and one of the most rewarding. I’m dyslexic, so reading 138,000 words aloud felt like climbing a mountain. But page by page, I made it to the summit. This audiobook isn’t just about the expeditions I’ve been on. It’s about where I’ve come from, and what I’ve had to overcome. For the first time, people will hear the real me, in my own words. It’s raw, it’s personal and my hope is that it shows others, especially young people who who’ve felt shut out, that they belong in any space they dare to step into.”

The audiobook is part travelogue, part memoir, and part passion pitch for the power of nature to drive personal growth and social change. It charts Fields’ extraordinary journey from London’s inner-city streets to some of the planet’s most remote and challenging environments - a journey that has seen him lead record-breaking expeditions across the Arctic and Caribbean and become a globally revered explorer and BAFTA-nominated TV presenter.

The audiobook is structured into three powerful chapters:

  • Exploring - Following Dwayne’s groundbreaking expeditions and his historic trek to the North Pole

  • My - Reflecting on his early life, including the violence and fear that nearly cost him his future, and the pivotal moments that reshaped his path

  • Limits - A rallying call to create equal access to the outdoors, challenging the societal and self-imposed barriers faced by young people from marginalised and underrepresented groups

Through candid conversations with inspiring guests including explorer Ben Fogle, footballer Adebayo Akinfenwa, ornithologist Maya-Rose Craig (Birdgirl), and youth worker Ken Hinds, Fields interrogates what holds people back, and what it takes to break through.

Whether confronting comments like “Isn’t that a white thing?” before his first polar expedition or redefining masculinity as a father of five and UK Chief Scout, Fields’ mission is clear: to inspire a new generation to embrace the outdoors and smash the barriers placed on them - by society and by themselves.

Exploring My Limits by Dwayne Fields (W.F. Howes) is out now, available from all good audiobook retailers.
